Digital video cameras continue to be as popular as ever. As they become more technologically sophisticated they're offering better quality and more functions in ever smaller packages. Top-of-the-range, high definition videocams can cost in excess of $3000 to buy. This figure would be even higher if existing mechanisms, which allow HD videos to be recorded on a conventional DV tape, couldn not be used.

It's hardly surprising, then, that digital video camera rental is fast becoming the preferred option for digital videocam users who only need to use the equipment for special occasions. With improvements in the technology moving fast, so fast that chances are a new model will already have been superseded by something better within six months, the trend to rent and not to buy seems set to continue.

As an irregular user, looking to take pictures at weddings or on holiday, constantly upgrading your digital videocam is neither a practical, nor cost-effective solution. Why not, then, get the best of both worlds – the latest models and the lowest prices – by choosing the rental option? Your biggest worry will be to pre-book well in advance at busy times of the year, like Christmas and New Year or Thanksgiving, to avoid disappointment. Look in the Yellow Pages or login to the internet, and you'll find there are some great deals to be had out there.

Great offers are available if you shop around. At Christmas and New Year, especially, extended and weekend rental bargains are to be had provided, as we've said, you book early. Throughout the year, even, many digital video camera rental outlets will offer an extra free rental day, and, at short notice, many shops will pull together a video camera package at very competitive prices.

The basic rental package, usually comprises spare batteries, charger, camcorder case, manufacturer's manual and a “quick-start” guide. Ease of use varies with the model, but the “Get Started” guide you should receive as part of the package will outline use of the main controls of On/Off, record and zoom buttons. A manual should also be supplied should you feel like exploring more options in detail.

Alternatively, as an infrequent user of digital camcorders, you will find that many rental outlets offer a photo printing or video transfer service, copying your film on to CD or DVD. Again, shop around for the best deals if you're interested in a complete service. Even with this service charge added to the hire cost, on any cost-benefit analysis you'll be getting a great deal.

Besides the basic package, optional extras are available. Accessories, such as tripods, external microphones and camcorder lights, though, are not seen as optional extras for many users who want to shoot that perfect picture for the perfect occasion. You will pay an extra hire charge for these items, as you will for video tapes and mini-DVD-Rs. The software to download your photos on to your PC will usually be included in the hire package, though. This software is very popular now and has largely replaced still photos on memory cards. Rent and you'll get the best for less.

Having decided that digital video camera rental is for you, the most important question to ask yourself before you proceed any further is: what do I want from a digital camcorder? Do I want a cheaper, standard format videocam, or would I prefer a high definition video?

Standard models use compact, 60-minute tapes, and can be plugged into the camcorder/playstation inputs on the front of many TVs and video recorders. The playback quality is very good. As a rule of thumb with standard models, the smaller the camera the fewer features it has. You want a larger optical zoom? Then you'll need to hire one of the slightly larger cameras. Even so, none is that big and all are easy to use for the novice.

But are you more technically-minded? If so, then an HD videocam, offering superb playback quality with four times the number of pixels as standard definition, would allow you to shoot a video of a wedding and edit the video on HDV. Be aware, though, that a very powerful PC is required to use video editing packages. The HDV footage can then be recorded on to a high definition DVD player with marvellous results.

Europe lags behind the U.S. where we have been able to enjoy high definition TV, and watch content from most of the major networks, for a number of years. Familiarity with the superb picture quality afforded by HD breeds contempt among aficionados for standard models. Renting a videocam allows the technically-minded to practise more demanding techniques and to produce top-class pictures without the substantial outlay involved in buying a top-notch videocam. And remember: as a perfectionist, you'll need accessories, too, which makes renting an even more attractive option.

So, novice or enthusiast, renting the equipment makes the best sense. The videocam's obsolescence, driven by continual improvements in technology, requires constant and expensive upgrading. The very high cost of buying top-of-the-range videocams, together with the easy availability of great-deal packages, including accessories, all make compelling reasons for renting and not buying.

“A picture is worth a thousand words”, so they say. Well, not quite, but it will have been worth reading a few hundred if you're now sold on the benefits of digital video camera rental.

Whether you are new to photography or a glowing professional, photography competitions are well worth considering. In order to increase your winning chances, you must first understand that what you consider to be the best image is not always reflected in the final result. This may sound ambiguous to some but certain requirements must be adhered to.

To be successful entering and winning photography competitions one must first understand what the judges and the companies holding these event require. Companies usually have strict guidelines telling photographers what sort of image they are looking for. Most companies will use the winning image as promotional material for their business, so submitting images that don’t meet their guidelines will certainly not be ranked.

Travel companies will be looking for an image that they can use on their brochure - so before you enter in any competition it is well worth while to take a close look at the company and the images they normally use.

Regardless of the type of image entered, photographers must submit images that are technical perfect, with good composition and proper exposure. Submitting poor quality images will waste your time along with the judges.

One of the utmost moments in any photographers career is to see his/her images displayed in the winners section of a website or newspaper or at a prize winners ceremony. This is a moment when a struggling photographer’s business may start to take off or give his studio an extra boost. It is also when the value of a photographer’s images rises.

But to win a photography competition, the right approach is very important.

Your image should hold a theme that will suit the company holding the competition. If the company is travel related they will be looking for an image that has vibrant colours; an image that has life and soul. Energy companies will want an image that will blend their industry and the environment together.

When entering a competition there will be hundreds, if not thousands of photographers with entries. To give yourself the best possible chance of winning, only submit images that you think will have a decent chance. The image that you enter should have impact and must be a photograph that you are proud of - an image that you are constantly showing off to your friends and family.

Prizes on offer vary and can range from cash to equipment. Some of the larger competitions pay out tens of thousands of dollars. Competitions that are free to enter will have smaller prizes but are still worth entering.

One thing you should remember is that some companies hold competitions to get free images. Before submitting your pictures, read the guidelines. Make sure that you will be able to sell the image after the competition and that you are not signing away the copyright of your image. If you are unsure about it and the guidelines are not clear, it is best not to enter.

There are thousands of competitions held all over the world each year. To find out which ones suit your photography contact your local camera club, or look up some of the photography directories on the web. Some of the larger competitions that are open to photographers world wide will charge a submission fee, but there are a wide selection of free competitions out there.

If you are new to photography or unsure about your chances of success its best to try a few free ones at the beginning.

Photography competitions can do so much for a photographers career - some say it’s the taking part that counts - but when the winner receives so much free advertising for their business, plus the large amounts of cash on offer; I think they are worth taking seriously.

Learn How Photo Repairs Can Help Recapture the Past

People take pictures to preserve the memories of a moment in time. Whether it is photos of a wedding, or a baby’s first birthday, the picture allows you to see what was happening, and allows those that were there to relive that time. Unfortunately, over time the quality of the picture fades. Unless the photo was carefully stored in an album it is possible that the photo has tears or cracks in the surface that mar the image. The good news is that photo repair is not only possible, you can actually make image enhancements if you so desire.

Modern digital photography allows photo repair specialists to apply photo restoration techniques that can bring your pictures back to nearly their original condition. In some cases it is even possible to exceed the quality of the original photograph. If the original photo was not in complete focus or the edges are slightly blurred, it is possible to sharpen the edges to make it appear more in focus.

If you have a photo that you are not happy with because of a blemish, you could send your picture to a photo repair specialist and have the blemish removed. If someone in the photo had their eyes closed or were making silly hand gestures, those problems could be fixed as well

Many older photos were shot before colour photography was within the budget of average people. Although the technology might have been available, most people opted for black and white film because it was far less expensive. With today’s technology, one of the image enhancements that is available is the ability to convert black and white to colour photos.

Another image enhancement that is available is the ability to take two separate photographs and make a single composite picture. This is done by taking a portion of one photo, and combining it with a portion of a second photo. You can have a collage of different images, or you can place an image against a different background. You could even take a picture of two people and make it appear that they were together when the photo was taken.

Another enhancement that you might want to consider with your photos is to have them enlarged. In the past enlarging a photo could result in a noticeable loss in the quality of the photo. Now, however providing the original photo is scanned at 300 DPI (dots per inch) or more, it is possible to have your smaller photos enlarged enough to be framed and hung over the mantle if you wanted. The photo you would get looks like it could be an original print.

Having photo repair work done on faded or damaged photos is a great way to help preserve those precious memories. Photo restoration techniques can help even badly damaged photos. Everything from having photos converted from black and white to colour, to getting image enhancements, your photos could be made as good as new, or maybe even better.

The Purpose of Computer Generated Images and Video

Traditionally, the goal of computer graphics has been photo-realism; to generate synthetic images that are indistinguishable from photographs. Today, this goal has arguably been achieved. Given enough time computers can generate imagery that is indistinguishable from photographic images to the naked eye, and models exist that simulate optical processes down to the level of individual photons. Generating computer images that are indistinguishable from photographs is essential for a host of applications including design, marketing, and the entertainment industry. In many applications, however, an artistic image has advantages over a photorealistic image. Artistic images omit extraneous detail, focus attention on relevant features, clarify, simplify, and disambiguate shape, and show hidden parts. This has lead an increasing number of scientists to question realism as the only goal for computer graphics, and ask: What are the images we create used for?

If the purpose of an image is simulation of physical interaction between light and matter (for research, realistic conceptualization, or entertainment), then photo-realism is a logically sound choice. If, on the other hand, the purpose is more general or abstract (to convey an idea, to give directions, to explain a situation, to give an example) then photo-realism may confuse the issue at hand through unnecessary specificity, visual clutter (masking), and physical limitations. For example, the spatial layout map of a subway system does not include every bend and corner (specificity) because only the stations and their relative positions are of interest to the viewer. The map does not include all the buildings and streets where the subway runs (visual clutter) because this would make it difficult to see the subway paths. Lastly, the map could not have been captured in a single photograph (physical limitation) because most parts of the subway system are underground and mutually hidden.


The Three types of Artistic Computer Graphics

We use the classification system of the Gooch and Gooch textbook that identifies three areas of Artistic computer graphics: (1)~Natural media simulation; (2)~Computer Tools for Artists; and (3)~Artistic style simulation.

Natural media simulation: Artistic rendering gives the graphics community freedom to choose media in addition to a camera for creating images. Natural media simulation concerns itself with simulating (realistically) the substance that is applied to an image (e.g. oil, acrylic, coal), the instruments with which the substance is applied (e.g. brush, pencil, crayon), and the substrate to which the substance is applied (e.g. canvas, paper). In all cases, the simulated media is intended to produce surface marks that are indistinguishable from the real media.

A common assumption in the graphics community is that artistic rendering only involves simulating natural artistic media. This assumption is not surprising, because the first research in the field focused on reproducing traditional art forms, such as pen and ink, watercolor, and oil on canvas. Technology development in any field first seeks to imitate the previous mode of working. Thus, Artistic rendering seems to be following the usual development scheme. Artistic rendering currently embraces a wider scope of research. For example, a recent trend in artistic rendering research is interactive techniques. Current work focuses on the detection and rendering of feature lines to communicate shape. Silhouettes, surface and texture boundary lines, as well as creases are important for communicating the shape of an object.

Computer Tools for Artists: Simulated media itself is of little practical use if it is not controlled by some entity. One of the most important skills for an artist to learn is choosing the correct medium for a given subject. Artists make these choices guided by considerations such as aesthetic appeal and the effectiveness of the medium in communicating the required visual message. Assisting users in creating images is therefore a worthwhile endeavor. Commercial products, such as Photoshop or CorelDraw provide a rich set of tools and functionality by re-purposing standard input devices (mouse, keyboard, digital tablet). Other software and research work assist users with technically challenging, tedious, or repetitive tasks, but ultimately the user still has to create the image and therefore make all decisions about layout, design, placement, etc.

Artistic Styles: The last category of NPR research takes inspiration from existing artistic styles and attempts to automatically transform some data (usually geometric models or photographs) into images in a given artistic style. Examples of this work include the creation of line drawings from three-dimensional models, light-models for cartoon-like shading, and painterly systems from geometric models, videos or photographs.

It should be noted that none of these systems presumes to create Art, they merely generate images that (as realistically as possible) resemble a particular artistic style. In short, much of Artistic computer graphics research is still devoted to realistic picture (as opposed to photo) creation.

Professional Photo Printing At Home

Nowadays, printing photos at home is an excellent option because it gives the photographer creative control over the final print. Just follow the simple guidelines below to achieve the best results.

Use the right paper

Whether you are printing digital pictures, producing reports, or making photo enlargements, you’ll maximize the quality of your prints by choosing the right paper.

Specialized inkjet photo paper delivers exceptional image clarity and resolution. More importantly, the photos dry instantly and the images are both water and smudge resistant. The specialty papers typically come in two sizes: 8.5 by 11 inches for larger prints; and 4 by 6 inches for the tradition photo-print size.

Software for the job

Once your images have been transferred from the camera to the computer, your photo software will determine how well your printed photos turn out. With that being said, make sure you take the time to familiarize yourself with all the key features of your software. Depending on the program, you might be able to:

o Sharpen your photo with the image editor’s sharpening tool. This will correct an out-of-focus or grainy picture.

o Increase the gamma. If your photo editor has a gamma correct tool, you can manipulate dark images to correct the brightness.

o Make the subject stand out by softening the background. Just select the area comprising the main subject, and then reverse the selection to select the background. Use your software’s softening function until you achieve the desired result.

Remember, all software products are slightly different in terms of features and capabilities. Nonetheless, you’ll always be able to enhance your images and add a creative touch to all your photos.

The feeding and care of your printer

It’s always a good idea to calibrate your printer’s head every time you change the ink cartridge. In most cases, this can be done using the printer’s built-in utility program accessed through your computer. Other ways that you could improve your output include:

o Select “Photo paper” or “Premium photo paper” from the paper-type settings.

o Select “Photo” or “Best photo options” from the printer properties and settings.

o Do your research and find an inexpensive, high-quality source for ink cartridges.

Also, keep in mind that your printer software allows you to organize multiple-size prints on one single page. With this kind of flexibility, you can maximize the use of the paper. For example, you could create rows of wallet-size prints to hand out to family members.

Match pixels and size

If you plan to enlarge your images and then print them, try adjusting your camera to a high-resolution setting. Lower-resolution images should work just fine for e-mail or posting on an Internet site. As a general rule, you should experiment with the different settings in your photo editing program to find out what works best for you.

Hence, while using Flash, make sure the entire area is lighted up equally. There is no theoretical rule for this – experience and practice will help you learn the lessons. So don’t be afraid of failure – keep on trying if you want to learn.

5 Simple Steps to Shooting Photos Like a Pro Bookmark This Article to Delicious

When my daughter was born four years ago, our new digital camera and I had to become friends. Fast. I didn’t have any experience as a photographer, or any time to learn the craft, yet I still had to find ways to get those perfect once in a lifetime shots. Through trial and error I found a system that works for me. While I’m sure I’m not blazing any new trails here, these are the guidelines I’ve used to get shots my family and friends enjoy:

1. Say No to Shutter Lag:
Get a fast camera. Shutter Lag is the enemy when your subject matter won’t sit still. I started with a Panasonic DMC LC20. After my daughter started getting a bit more mobile I graduated to a Canon EOS Digital Rebel. It’s hard to find shutter lag stats published even in independent reviews. Try out the camera in the store if possible, and pick a moving target. I had a friend rotate slowly. I snapped a shot when he was facing the camera. If the picture was of his profile or the back of his head, I know I had to keep looking.

2. Say Yes to Storage:
Get a memory card for your camera with as much storage capacity as possible. I use 1GB and that allows me to take about 160 shots before I have to transfer photos from my camera to my computer. Be sure you have a fresh memory card for each new outing. Pick up a memory card reader to speed up the process. You need to clear your card frequently so you don’t want comparitively slow USB cable transfer speeds getting in the way. And don’t cheat by using a low resolution or low quality image setting. Use the highest quality and resolution you can.

3. No Film, No Fear. Take a Lot of Shots:
Those precious moments come and go quickly. Get them even if the framing and zoom are not perfect. That can be fixed later. However, be sure to learn how to properly use your auto focus. Very out of focus images are something you can’t fix after the fact.

4. Go Deeper. Find the Hidden Gems:
Once you’ve transferred your images to your computer, review them carefully to find the shot within the shot. If you’ve taken enough shots, the gems will be there. You’ll need a decent digital image editing software package with and easy to use cropping tool. ACDSee 9 Photo Manager is a good tool at a good price.

5. Shed Unwanted Pixels. Crop Crop Crop:
